CJay's profile

CJay Philip was born a multidisciplinary artist. Even as a child focusing on one thing was not for her and only left CJay unsatisfied, frustrated and crying in her crib. Mom always had to leave multiple toys and options to satisfy her budding desire to experiment and create.

Today, not much has changed. CJay is the artistic director of Dance & Bmore, a contemporary and theatrical dance company fusing movement, live vocals, spoken word, and original songs written by CJay to create a rich and colorful tapestry of original works; the dancers sing, the singers dance, and the artistic lines are blurred to create a multidisciplinary experience that is exciting not only for the audience but for the artists as well.

As a freelance director, CJay has helped produce some of Baltimore's most exciting performance events. CJay directed the WOW - Women of the World concert at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. She directed the main stage of the African Heritage Festival in 2011 and Centerstage's 50 Fest in 2012. She has directed and choreographed numerous performances and events at Centerstage, Everyman Theater, and Baltimore School for the Arts. CJay is also the creative director of Bmore Broadway Live, which produces Broadway shows with Baltimore talent.

As a songwriter, she creates new music and vocal arrangements for the Dance & Bmore ensemble, and she also creates songs to accompany DAB's signature holistic wellness program, engaging Baltimore families through dance while promoting healthy lifestyles and quality time for parents and kids. The FazaFam Family Jam is one of the longest-running programs by Dance & Bmore. CJay has also developed an Elder Arts and Wellness program, uplifting and inspiring senior citizens to share their oral history through music, creative movement, and storytelling.

The daughter of a retired social worker and community activist, CJay can't help but see the world around her as an opportunity to use her creativity and diverse talents to engage and ignite change within the minds, hearts, and homes of the people she encounters along her creative journey.

"It's not the amount of talent that gives you value, but what you do with it." Director, Choreographer, Singer/Songwriter, Actress, Playwright and Poet
