Julie's profile

A tunnel fire at Mt. Royal Station, 9/11 (September 11 2001), and the DC Sniper greeted Julie Jankowski in her first 4 months in Baltimore. She had relocated from the Midwest to work on her MFA at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Perhaps it was a mixture of these dire circumstances, along with her interest in the awesomeness of satellite networks that connect us and new imaging technologies that led her to her current work. Jankowski uses satellite images, GPS tracking maps and maps of real and imagined places, threaded with environmental queries, and socio-political quandries as bases for her projects.

Julie Jankowski studied painting at Indiana University and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She then completed a Bachelors of Fine Art Degree in painting and printmaking at Ball State University in 1984. Jankowski has since been a professional artist in residence at Ox Bow, Summer School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a resident at the Vermont Studio Center.

While at MICA, Jankowski's work was selected for national publication in New American Paintings: MFA Annual 2003, in addition to being selected for inclusion in the accompanying brick-and-mortar exhibition of eight of the 32 artists published in the book, Selections from New American Paintings MFA Annual 2003 Exhibition, at OSP Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts.

Jankowski's pieces have been selected for exhibition by curators and jurors from Romano Gallery, Blair Academy, Blairstown, NJ; Goucher College, Baltimore, MD; the Institute for Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Delaware Center for Contemporary Art; and P.S. 1, New York. In 2006 she was a semi-finalist in the Janet and Walter Sondheim Prize competition, and 2008 a Trawick Prize semi-finalist. In the Midwest, her work has been selected for exhibition in the Indiana Women's Caucus for Art Traveling Exhibition; Midwest Museum of American Art, Elkhart, Indiana; South Bend Regional Museum of Art, South Bend, Indiana; and Arts Indiana, Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana.

In addition to being an exhibiting artist, and graphic designer, Jankowski teaches post-secondary drawing, painting and design.
