About Greg

Baltimore City
I'm a director and photographer. I enjoy working with puppets, sets, and prosthetics because of the imagination inherent in the media. These kinds of obviously-fake storytelling devices  make a narrative more real in comparison, and bring people along for the ride.

I've spent the last year making Kids' Table, a short opera about a group of childhood friends growing into teenagers. I've been working on it with longtime musical collaborator Ben Levin, and a group of exceptional… more

Secret Dog Brigade - Visualizing Music and Story

Secret Dog Brigade is a Boston-based music collective, supporting several different projects with overlapping members and influences. I have been working with the group for the last 8 years creating visual representations of the ideas and emotions in their music.
  • Ben Levin Group - Foreverman
Foreverman is a collaboration with Ben Levin Group, using a combination of stop-motion, frame animation, live action, and vector animation to illustrate one movement from a larger musical story of transformation. The piece brings together the tools of my professional work with craft and puppetry ideas stolen from my theatre career, part of an emerging everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach to animation.
  • Bent Knee - Leak Water (Official Video)
Leak Water is a non-narrative piece of music, a mix of emotions felt at one moment stretched out over several minutes. The narrator of the text is a child, frustrated and in pain while having her hair combed. This is a moment that looks trivial from the outside, but is very real to the person experiencing it, and also a strange sort of proxy war between individual freedom and standards of beauty, fought by parent and child. I chose to represent this frozen emotional moment with collage-style visuals that never quite settle into one reality, sticking to the basic nature of emotions such as hope, foreboding, and loneliness with basic, archetypal figures.
  • ThatOneEyedKid - Always
ThatOneEyedKid's music brings energetic dance-pop elements into unhappy stories, which I've always felt sends a message that everything will be ok in the end. The video we designed for the track "Always" used lighting changes and curtain moves to create changing environments within a single take. I wanted the piece to feel like theatre, where there's always positivity behind even a sad story.
  • Ben Levin - Grown Up
The track Grown Up is an experiment in spoken word and digital music production. I wanted to match this stripped-down process with a studio project that emphasized the performer. We spent a day changing wardrobe and movement elements and digging into the meaning of the words.
  • Bent Knee - Say So
    Bent Knee - Say So
The album "Say So" features characters who are trapped, or unable to speak. I started working with a Red Riding Hood theme, which quickly morphed into a more anonymous person lost in the woods, surrounded by life but unable to communicate.
  • Bent Knee - Land Animal
Land Animal is one of two videos we shot in a weekend in Baltimore, both using nontraditional narratives to explore a sense of being stuck.
  • Bent Knee - Terror Bird
"Terror Bird" is part two of a series with "Land Animal"

Portraits

My ongoing portrait series works with one person at a time to discover a heightened, heroic, mythicized version of their personality. These shoots are a chance to explore, to play with artifacts from someone's life in a narrative setting.
