2015 Paintings III

These paintings depict everyday moments including relationship events, conversations, working out, getting ready for a night out and other "snap-shot" moments that reference a longer story. I highlight feelings of social anxiety, nervousness and self-consciousness especially as these emotions relate to the experience of being a woman. I combine influences from art history, mass media, fashion photography, advertising and other images associated with popular culture and consumerism. My paint application is varied juxtaposing painterly areas, thin washes, thick impasto, flat, graphic shapes and a sensitive, personal handwriting. Through my process, I create images of universal social encounters and voyeuristic windows into private moments that consider how people view others and how they view themselves.

2015 Paintings II

In this body of work, I paint the type of super hot women that are glorified by contemporary media: the young, the fit, the gorgeous, the enviable. Epitomizing media-prescribed contemporary beauty standards, the women in my paintings are often working toward self improvement in their appearance. In inoffensive, friendly, candy-colored palettes, I place the bodies on the surface of the painting more like an abstract composition than a classical figure painting. I apply the paint to work toward a slick, smooth, “Pop-Art” finish; however, I leave elements of the painting raw, unresolved or in-progress, as in the way women are encouraged to regard their bodies and themselves as things that are never ready or finished.
