About Scott
Baltimore City
With my "2 by 2" watercolor series of couple’s portraits my intent is to project the power of the individuals and the strength of the pair. The subject matter is the human self: how we see each other and how we want to be seen. Each painting began by observing pairs of people usually in public places. I look for something rather unique and distinguishing about them. Invariably my paintings highlight the inner strength and integrity of my subjects.

Pandemic mask wearing recedes
My "2 by 2" watercolor series of couples began in 2017 and has spanned the COVID pandemic. This portfolio begins with paintings at the start of 2021 when folks wore masks in public in Baltimore. By April with vaccinations well underway, people began appeared in public without masks. This portfolio follows that transition.

Beginning of "Pandemic Pairs"
Once I became comfortable wearing a mask in April 2020, I began a variation on the "2 by 2" series that I call "Pandemic Pairs." I wanted to reflect how the world abruptly changed after folks took the crisis seriously in Baltimore. I still asked people to stare at my iPhone and not to smile because a smile shows up in the eyes, not just the mouth.

The start of "2 by 2" series
In the summer of 2017 I decided to see what would happen if I returned to photographing people in public spaces like as I was doing over 30 years ago. This meant not doing such programmatic paintings like the UP IN ARMS series that I worked on for four years starting in 2013. There I asked folks to hold up above their heads an object closely associated with themselves so that I could paint only their arms and the object. In returning to the whole figure, the resulting watercolors become portrature in a way that projects personal confidence and intiates a one-on-one conversation/confrontation with the viewer. A recent blog post of mine talks about how a group of paintings from 1983 is similar but much different from these new people-in-public-places paintings. TARGETS
The use of guns is so epidemic in this county that this series is dedicated to the victims of gunfire. But it also raises questions as to who are the shooters and who are the victims and what are the relationships between the two. After I finished the painting, I went to an indoor shooting range and had each painting shot up.
These paintings from the winter of 2017 were the culmination of my "Up In Arms" series of watercolors that bergan in 2013. They can be viewed on my website at: http://www.scottponemone.com/portfolio/up-in-arms-2/
