About Stephen

Baltimore City
Stephen Hendee is a sculptor who builds objects inspired by digital culture, speculative fiction, and architecture. His work has been exhibited at MOMA/ PS.1 Contemporary Art Center, The New Museum for Contemporary Art, SculptureCenter, and The Whitney Museum Of American Art. Recent awards include a 2017  Maryland State Art Council Artist Award in Sculpture/Installation, a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 2019, and a HEMI research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in 2021.

29"x76"x56" This project honors the literary Science Fiction writer Stanislaw Lem, inspired by a story within the book IMAGINARY MAGNITUDE (1985), a collection of introductions to books that do not exist. GOLEM XIV depicts the creation, cognitive self-awareness and Mysterious disappearance of a powerful artificial intelligence that becomes a prominent philosophical critic of humankind. The imagery of this game depicts physical descriptions of the spaces that GOLEM XIV presumably existed in. Replays at 6300 Points, 7700 Points, and 8500 Points
