Nicole Lenzi’s work questions what a drawing is and its link to thinking and time passage.  She works between mediums to expand the concept of drawing including installations, photography, and works on paper. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums nationally and internationally.. She has a B.F.A from Carnegie Mellon University and an M.F.A from the Maryland Institute College of Art.  Her blog, Expanded, presents a range of contemporary drawing practices… more

My art questions what a drawing is and how it can affect thinking. Works are composed of marks that are signs of time and, referencing artist Avis Newman, thought. I take an interdisciplinary approach to expand the concept of drawing that includes installation, works on paper, and photography. Eastern philosophy, time, architecture, and the everyday are influences. I work responsively between all of these entities. That is where experimentation happens and the medium opens to what it can be.

“All things are continually interacting with each other, and in doing so each bears the traces of that with which it has interacted:...”
― Carlo Rovelli, Seven Brief Lessons on Physics
Between 0 and 1 explores the link between drawing, time, and thinking. at the quantum level. In the quantum world, myriad interactions occur in matter between 0 and 1. In these works, the conglomeration and interplay of lines drawn over time become metaphors for the ephemeral nature of thought. Surprise alignments bring about moments of clarity and insight.

What if drawing became more an intergral part of daily life? This past year, I began Walking Drawings as part of a project called Passing Through, orchestrated by artist Sarah Tutt. The project centered around mapping the lines seen when walking the same urban route twelve times.

I found the activity aligned with interests in merging drawing with daily life as well as interests in mark making and thought. The activity evolved into drawing during the in-between moments of a day. These include when running errands and taking walks after work. Mark making during these mundane activities is giving a new perspective on the link between drawing and thinking and how to experience the medium.

Recent installations, In Between Classes,  focus on temporality and the interplay of light and shadow upon architecture or geometric structures. Works explore how drawings can develop from this everyday phenomenon. They grow out of moments in time; when light enters a window or peeps through the slits in a wooden deck. Interventions are made with small scale geometric materials like cinderblocks to stir a drawing into being. Shifts in lighting and shadow are documented. Times are recorded in titles. Like Walking Drawings, they are created in the in between moments, in this case classes of the workday.

Sight Drawings.2018-Current.

Sight Drawings are drawings seen in passing. They may share formal qualities with traditional works like light and shadow or inspire the imagination for new ones to come.  No interventions are made.
