About Nicole

Baltimore County

Nicole Lenzi’s work questions what a drawing is and its link to thinking and time passage.  She works between mediums to expand the concept of drawing including installations, photography, and works on paper. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums nationally and internationally.. She has a B.F.A from Carnegie Mellon University and an M.F.A from the Maryland Institute College of Art.  Her blog, Expanded, presents a range of contemporary drawing practices… more

Conglomerates (Lichens)

Conglomerates are a study of tension and balance between differences. Built on the floor, they form a reciprocal relationship with the environment they are made in. Diverse edges, shapes, and tones are juxtaposed in these works. Moldings are placed in between to act as flexible joints; easing tension between male and female. Shadows are recorded over time onto materials and floor in many shapes and shades of gray, often creating unexpected alignments. Drawn marks ebb and flow in response to the different tones and edges, forging connections between opposites. Rounded feminine curves invite unrestricted movement while the upright masculine cause abrupt stops. Refraction is employed to break lines past barriers; expanding them outward into the open space.

Recently I have begun comparing Conglomerates to the lichen plant; specifically to how it forms. Lichens are two plants living together as a single unit; the fungus and the photobiot. Each needs the other to survive. These flowerless plants are site specific and grow slowly in odd places where land borders water, like rocks. Likewise, genders are interdependent in Conglomerates. They are built at intersection spots in a room; where the floor meets the wall or a corner.

Outside In/Inside Out.

This expanded drawing installation grew out of the interior and exterior architecture and materials of the space. Shadow lines where also recorded to expand the drawing into its surroundings.

Conglomerates (Public) No. 1, 2019.

Conglomerates (Public) are constructed in response to urban architecture. Composed of the various materials found in and around a building, they are created along its edges and shadow lines. This integration forges a dialogue between the two different sized structures and male and female. Unlike the institutional buildings they stand by, Conglomerates (Public) are fragile, temporary spatial works standing in a delicate state of balance. Works are documented before falling over in the wind.
