Sirens

A speaker in each extinguisher is placed at a point of resonance and is driven by a sine wave generator which creates a sine wave with tremolo and vibrato. Each extinguisher is tuned to a different frequency. The two extinguishers on the outside are tuned lower around 300 Hz and 500 Hz and produce a phasing effect. The center is tuned higher to a frequency near a high note of the female voice.

Bicycle Gallery

The "Bicycle Gallery" is a unique venue that allows artist to travel their work to other cities and expose it to an unrealized audience. It also serves as an injection of art into everyday life. It can be quite humorous to watch people interact with the Bicycle Gallery as people are most interested in it while it's moving; often people chase after or shout "wait come back". The work expresses the excitement and frustration Dustin has felt working as an artist/curator often focusing more time on other artists' work than on his own. In this project Carlson and other artists literally take the role of a workhorse pulling art around town meeting and greeting people. This is not unlike the role Carlson and other artist have played in Baltimore, revitalizing neighborhoods, creating galleries, and music venues, dragging artist and civilians along their artful path through life.

UFO

UFO
Two light towers were installed in a gallery facing each other illuminating the floor in the center of the room. Bright full-spectrum light filled the room and a soft whirring sound from a fan cooling each of the high power CFL could be faintly heard.
Light towers are a monument to humanity?s triumph over nature. Daylight can be created anywhere, as long as there is oil to burn. Light towers symbolize both oppression and assurance. Light towers light up construction sites so workers can work at night when there is less traffic, they provide noise and pollution while lighting up art at a city arts festival, they create a since of security when used by police to light up areas that may be dark and dangerous. This fall while walking form a museum in Manhattan I had been working at to a hotel I was staying I observed light towers in three distinct roles; first I witnessed them parked along the road being temporarily stored after they were used for the 9/11 memorial, as I walked by Occupy wall street they were set up lighting the park where the tents were, and I saw them lighting up a soccer field so a game could take place even though lights had been damaged by a recent hurricane.
UFO is an extension of the concepts I worked with in the Cowboys and Engines body of work. The light towers have a mass produced feel but are handmade. Certain elements are minimized while others are made to have a greater impact on the viewer; this gives the light towers a universal feel while at the same time making them completely unique.

Cowboys and Engines

In his Body of work ?Cowboys and Engines?, Dustin Carlson playfully explores the paradox of the American Dream. Using commercial iconography as an altar for consumption; he attempts to trigger personal memories and reveal the contradictions between what is desired and what is achieved.
?Cowboys and Engines? embodies Americas individuality, innovation, and consumption. It attempts to present both sides of the environmental and social issues it examines allowing the viewer to consider decisions they are faced with every day in life.

Badlands

Badlands is an exhibit installed on the median strip of Mount Royal Ave. The three installations Gorge, Butte, and Pinnacle, are life size sculptures of environments found in contemporary culture. The titles of the installations describe the landforms created by the erosion of a plateau. In order to elucidate ordinary experiences viewers are confronted with objects they interact with on regular bases but in an unusual context.

Land of the Free

This installation examines personal freedom, individual responsibility, and oversight.

Carlson has drawn inspiration from the Baltimore dirt bike phenomenon since he moved to the city nearly 20 years ago.

Motorbikes are mounted in the wheelie position and a Baltimore style bench was created with the ghosting of letters "Baltimore The Greatest City in America"
