Monika Burwell was born and educated in Germany. She immigrated to the United State in 1970, attended photography classes at MICA, studied art history at The Johns Hopkins University and graduated in horticulture and landscape design from George Washington University.
In 1991 she created Earthly Pursuits, Inc. a natural garden design company and sells plants via the company's website.
