  • r_upTure by Brittany J. Green (2021)

Composed by Brittany J. Green Premiered by Mind on Fire - July 8, 2021 Danced by Ayan Felix Shot by Ivy Williams Edited by Jason Charney "r_upTure (2021) draws its musical material and text from a Python program by the same name. The Python program was designed to build a musical system that filters out non-common pitches between chords in a given progression. As the program runs, however, the system begins to rupture, adding in non-common pitches and chord extensions. Several resultant iterations of the program were used as source material and appear as layered strands throughout the piece. The text narrated throughout the piece is a recitation of the program's code. The rupturing of both the program and the piece draws from modes of resistence and rupture theorized in the works of Black Feminist theorist bell hooks, creating a sonic space that imagines how structures can be ruptured and redefined." - Brittany J.

  • Anywhere Everywhere by Tim Holt (2021)

Anywhere Everywhere (2021) Performed by Mind On Fire featuring Taylor Boykins, mezzo-soprano I partnered with Mind On Fire(Baltimore, MD) to release seven short films on their Patreon channel from November through December of 2021. We adapted a work I had written and premiered a year earlier with Loop38 (Houston, TX). The piece is about the quasi lonely feelings of being in new places or being stuck in the same place. Then it's about how all places are the same because you feel the same way in them. Then it's about how this ultimately makes everything feel connected and meaningful. Maybe it's also about nostalgia and sehnsucht. Along with their instrumental parts, I had the performers record videos of their lives that I edited into the final film. They are interspersed with my own videos, some from as far back as five or six years ago and from everywhere I've ever been since then.

  • Gladly Beyond by Ledah Finck

Gladly Beyond, for alto flute, viola, and double bass (2016)

Performed by Ledah Finck (viola), Stephanie Ray (alto flute), and Yoshiaki Horiguchi (double bass)

Recorded at the Peabody Institute by Anastasia Kupstas
    2019

This work was performed frequently by Trio Jinx between 2016 and 2018 and owes much to the interpretation of that ensemble. It was loosely inspired by e.e. cummings' poem "somewhere i have never travelled" ...gladly beyond any experience, your eyes have their silence...
